You can build an honest portfolio through self-directed practice projects. The important distinction is to label sample work clearly and explain your contribution, rather than presenting an invented client relationship or result.

Choose three realistic practice briefs

For example, prepare an event announcement, write a service-page draft and create a simple website layout. Give each project a target audience, a practical goal and a few constraints. Use a fictional organisation or get permission before using a real organisation’s brand.

Show your decisions

For each example, describe the brief, your role, the tools used and the reason behind key choices. Include a clear finished output and, where helpful, a before-and-after comparison using material you have permission to show. Keep explanations concise enough for a busy reader.

Be explicit about sample work

Use labels such as ‘Self-directed practice project’ or ‘Concept design—not commissioned’. Do not invent testimonials, client names, sales figures or audience growth. If you used AI assistance, explain the meaningful part you completed and checked yourself.

Present a small, useful selection

Choose your strongest relevant work rather than every exercise. Check spelling, links, file loading and readability on a phone. Remove private information and make sure images, fonts and other materials are suitable for the intended use.
